For the coordination of the activities within the center of excellence for high-performance computing (NHR) at the Zuse Institute, we are looking for a candidate as 

HPC / NHR Service Center Manager (m/w/d)

100% - TV-L Berlin according to qualification 

as soon as possible, initially limited in time until 31.12.2025 with the option of a permanent appointment. 

The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is an interdisciplinary research institute for applied mathematics and data-intensive high-performance computing. Its research focuses on modeling, simulation and optimization with scientific cooperation partners from academia and industry. Beginning in January 2021, ZIB extends its scientific services by offering HPC consulting for scientists in Germany and international projects as part of the nationwide HPC initiative “NHR” (Nationales Hochleistungsrechnen – NHR). We operate compute and storage resources at the top level. Currently, the HLRN-IV system “Lise” of the North German Supercomputing Alliance (Norddeutscher Verbund zur Förderung des Hoch- und Höchstleistungsrechnens – HLRN) with its 8 PFLOP/s peak performance provides a platform to realize demanding computational tasks and data analysis workflows to solve complex scientific questions. The “Lise” system comprises 120,000 compute cores, 500 TB distributed memory, and 8 PB persistent on-line storage. 

Your responsibilities: 

  • Technical and administrative leadership to HPC consulting and HPC operations to ensure high-quality scientific services including HPC consulting within the NHR center of excellence at ZIB. 
  • Strategic development and implementation of NHR services, taking into account the evolution of hardware/software technologies and simulation/data analysis methods. 
  • Contribute to the planning, proposal, and execution of research projects, including with other NHR centers, in areas of HPC methodological science or applied science, respectively. 
  • Plan, coordinate, and actively participate in the establishment and development of the education and training program in the NHR, communication with the NHR community, and dissemination of ZIB contributions. 
  • Support the HPC users of the NHR in one of the following scientific areas: computer science/data science, life science, chemistry/materials science, earth system science, computational fluid dynamics. 
  • Participate in planning, selection and acceptance of HPC production and test systems; conceptual development and coordination of the integration of the HPC systems into the local IT infrastructure of the ZIB (network, tape archive, security infrastructure), the cooling infrastructure, and the energy supply. 
  • Conduct HPC-related research and publish at international scientific conferences and journals.

Requirements: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in at least one of the following core areas with strong links to high-performance computing: computer science/data science, machine learning/AI, chemistry/material science, life science, earth system science, computational fluid dynamics, 
  • Proven very good knowledge of parallel computer architectures (processors, memory systems, HPC interconnects) and the implementation of application-oriented methods and algorithms on large HPC systems, 
  • Good knowledge about operating HPC systems and hands-on experience using resource management software, scalable storage solutions, or system monitoring, 
  • Business fluent knowledge of the German and English language, 
  • A doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in one of the above core areas is desirable, 
  • Several years of experience in personnel management are desirable.
