Research Group Co-Leader Diagnostics

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI researches and develops special problem solutions at the interfaces of medicine, life sciences and engineering. For a research group at our Leipzig site we are looking for an experienced scientist who is motivated to co-lead a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of researchers and provides new impetus for future-oriented scientific projects. The team develops innovative diagnostic procedures for the medical, environmental and food sector.

What you will do

  • In tandem, you will lead a research group and be responsible for the technical and personnel management of the team. In doing so, you will be supported by comprehensive training opportunities and exchange formats as part of our management qualification program as required.
  • With your expertise, you will develop innovative ideas and business models for tomorrow’s diagnostics and contribute with your own impulses to the scientific and economic development of your research area at Fraunhofer IZI.
  • You will be responsible for acquiring and submitting applications for industrial contract research and public research funding. In addition, a forward-looking, timely and efficient project and budget planning for new and ongoing projects will be in your hands.
  • You represent the research group at project meetings as well as at national and international fairs and conferences, communicate with partners from industry and academia, and continuously cultivate and expand your network.

What you bring to the table

  • You have completed a PhD in the field of life sciences and have several years of professional experience in research, ideally - but not necessarily - also in industry.
  • In the course of your career to date, you have gained in-depth knowledge in the field of either artificial intelligence in diagnostics, synthetic biology, biosensing & -analytics, molecular diagnostics or microfluidics / Organs-on-Chip.
  • Previous experience in initiating and acquiring new research projects is desirable.
  • You enjoy networking within the scientific community and score points with your structured and independent way of working. Due to your strong organizational skills, you are able to work on several projects in parallel.
  • You are willing to constantly expand your personal skills and set value on transparent, appreciative and supportive collaboration with your colleagues.
  • For the cooperation with international project partners, you are a strong communicator in written and spoken English.

What you can expect

  • We strengthen your skills - through feedback in regular employee appraisals, comprehensive further training opportunities and various career programs as part of management qualification.
  • Through close ties to industry, at Fraunhofer IZI creative research freedom meets real value creation - and with added value for society. Through your commitment, you will help design the medicine of tomorrow and gain exciting insights into the leading organization for application-oriented research in Europe.
  • You will be part of a dedicated team and have the opportunity to actively shape your work area and promote your ideas in national and international scientific collaborations.
  • Top-level research is only possible with top-level equipment: on a total of almost 8000 m² of laboratory space, we offer you everything a researcher's heart desires. With us, you will find a modern working atmosphere in one of the most vibrant and fastest growing cities in Germany.
  • Through flexible and trust-based working hours as well as home office options, we enable free and self-determined time management.
  • Sometimes family comes first - we know that! That's why we offer a wide range of support services to help you balance family and career (e.g. parent-child office, daycare facility at the institute, pme family service, childcare services from our partner voiio).
  • Additional benefits: 30 days of vacation based on a 5-day week (Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are also off work), annual bonus, compensatory time off for overtime, company pension plan, capital-forming benefits, a discounted job ticket for public transportation, free car parking and safe bicycle parking with charging stations for electric vehicles, and discounted employee prices in the institute's cafeteria.
