Technical assistant (MTA/BTA/CTA/PTA) or biology laboratory assistant

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Its Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI researches and develops special problem solutions at the interfaces of medicine, life sciences and engineering. One of its main tasks is contract research for biotechnological, pharmaceutical and medical technology companies, clinics, diagnostic laboratories and research institutes.

For our research group »Clinical Gene Transfer« we are looking for a technical assistant or biology laboratory assistant at our Leipzig site as soon as possible. The newly established group deals with the basic molecular biology, cellular regulation and genetic applications of transposable elements (transposons). Transposon-based gene vectors are entering the mainstream for genetic manipulation of mammalian (including human) cells. On this basis, the group develops innovative, non-viral gene transfer technologies in the fields of gene therapy and regenerative medicine with the intention of guiding these technologies towards clinical applications.

What you will do

  • You will support the scientific staff in the development and testing of new transposon constructs.
  • In the course of this, you will prepare molecular biological reagents and carry out cell transfections and reporter assays.
  • In order to identify transposon insertion sites using PCR-based methods, you will prepare PCR libraries for next generation sequencing.
  • To investigate genetic mechanisms in vivo, you will also be involved in animal testing. This includes stem cell transplantation and genotyping.

What you bring to the table

  • You have completed vocational training as a technical assistant, biology laboratory assistant or a comparable qualification and have practical knowledge in the fields of cell culture and molecular biology.
  • You already have experience with animal testing in the field of mouse models for human diseases. A FELASA-B certificate is desirable, but not a requirement.
  • You enjoy working in a team, you are helpful and enjoy close professional exchange with colleagues.
  • You are characterized by a conscientious and careful way of working. Even in times of high workload, you do not lose track of your tasks.
  • You are confident in using Microsoft Office applications, can quickly familiarize yourself with new IT applications and have a good command of written and spoken English.

What you can expect

  • You will help shape the medicine of tomorrow and gain exciting insights into the leading organization for application-oriented research in Europe.
  • You will be part of a committed team and have the opportunity to actively shape your area of work and contribute your ideas. Our flat management hierarchy supports the independent work of our employees.
  • Cutting-edge research is only possible with cutting-edge equipment: with a total of almost 8000 m² of laboratory space, we offer you everything a researcher's heart desires.
  • We strengthen your skills - through feedback in regular staff appraisals, comprehensive further training opportunities and much more.
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models and trust-based working hours allow you to manage your time freely and independently.
  • Sometimes family comes first - we know that! That's why we offer a wide range of support services to help reconcile family and career (e. g. parent-child office, childcare facility at the institute, pme family service, childcare activities provided by our partner voiio).
  • 30 days' vacation based on a 5-day week (Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are also work-free for us), special annual payment, time off in lieu for overtime, company pension plan, capital-forming benefits, a discounted Germany Job Ticket for public transport, free parking and secure bicycle parking spaces with charging stations for electric vehicles and discounted employee prices in the institute canteen.

The position is initially limited to 3 years, but longer-term employment is aspired. The weekly working time is 39 hours; the position can also be filled part-time. Employment, remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD). In addition, Fraunhofer may grant performance- and success-based variable remuneration components.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
