Your new job

Warehouse logistics specialist (m/f/d)

What is it about?

Warehouse logistics specialists accept goods, check them and store them properly. They put together deliveries and route plans, load and dispatch goods. They are also involved in optimizing logistics processes.

Goods at a glance

High racks, barrels, containers, regardless of how transport and logistics companies or industrial companies store their goods and raw materials in the warehouse: Warehouse logistics specialists know where each product is located. With the help of RFID technology, they can call up product location and information. They record and check incoming and outgoing goods, assemble loads and pack individual parts safely for transportation.

They also ensure that deliveries reach the right recipient at the right time. When goods are delivered to the warehouse, warehouse logistics specialists receive the accompanying documents from the drivers. They check whether the information on quantity and content matches the actual delivery and randomly check whether the goods are undamaged. They note defects on the papers. They also accept returns and check them for completeness. They then enter the goods in the computer as incoming goods. In the case of returns, they will arrange for any further steps to be taken.

Correct storage

Warehouse logistics specialists plan which goods are to be stored where in the warehouse and organize the unloading of the trucks. If a delivery is collected the very next day, it must be stored in an easily accessible location. Perishable foodstuffs and animal feed must be stored in a cool place, toxic substances, heating oil or gas cylinders must be stored under special safety precautions. Warehouse logistics specialists also consider the volume and weight of the goods: can the items be stacked? What is the load capacity of the shelving in the warehouse? You determine the most cost-effective, safest and space-saving approach. They then store the goods using conveying equipment such as forklift trucks, overhead cranes or automatic conveying or sorting systems and document all processes using special software.

Particularly in large warehouses with thousands of different goods or individual parts, the location of each individual product variant must be precisely documented: whether to store incoming goods in the right place, sort returns or compile goods for delivery. The exact storage locations can then also be called up on the digital assistant at any time. Warehouse logistics specialists also carry out regular visual inspections after storage, check goods with best-before dates and check that the humidity and temperature are correct.

Outgoing goods

Outgoing goods must also be organized routinely and efficiently. Warehouse logistics specialists may work out complete route plans, taking into account factors such as costs or speed. When researching and filling out the shipping documents, they sometimes also need to know English. This is followed by order picking, i.e. the order-specific picking of goods from the warehouse, for example voice-controlled (pick-by-voice). Here, the specialist staff receive instructions via headphones as to which products they should remove from the shelves and can confirm the removal via microphone. With pick-by-light picking, a light marks the compartment with the required parts. When warehouse logistics specialists pack deliveries, they take into account the type of goods and transport, transport route and cost-effectiveness as well as legal safety regulations, customs regulations and environmental protection guidelines.

They select suitable packaging machines and equipment, and label and mark the goods. Special attention is paid to hazardous substances. For example, certain hazardous goods may not be transported together. Warehouse logistics specialists prepare accompanying documents for truck drivers. When they issue the goods, they book them out of stock by computer. Together with the driver, they load and secure the goods. When transporting hazardous goods, they attach the necessary signs to the truck. In addition to incoming and outgoing goods, warehouse logistics specialists optimize the flow of information, materials and values. They carry out inventory work, analyze procurement planning and check stock levels both quantitatively and qualitatively. They also explore new favorable procurement options, compare offers, order goods and arrange for payment.
