Job Summary/Overview
The Strategic Sourcing Specialist creates, documents, and implements procurement plans within the scope of new product development projects; also, identifies, develops and qualifies suppliers of raw materials, fabricated parts, and components in close collaboration with the NPD and manufacturing Operations Teams.
The scope of the role is to support the procurement needs of the new product development team, across all commodities – engineered assemblies, castings, forgings, machined parts, electrical and electronic components. This is a liaison role between Procurement, Quality, Engineering and Suppliers. The role also includes collaboration with commodity managers to implement the overall Columbus McKinnon global sourcing and procurement strategies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Drive strategic procurement decisions in coordination with Product Management, Engineering, and Quality.
Collaborate and negotiate with suppliers to achieve the material cost, delivery conditions, payment terms, and service requirements.
Lead “Buy vs. Make” decisions in collaboration with the NPD, Industrialization and manufacturing Operations Teams. Analyze, propose, and qualify suppliers in terms of capacity, commercial viability, logistics, financial strength, quality systems, management strength, technical and after sales support.
Collaborate in the creation of DFMEA and PFMEA documentation, part/component qualification plans, PPAP, and quality plans.
Locate and develop suppliers to meet the technical requirements of CMCO Global operations. Drive localization of suppliers in accordance with the Columbus McKinnon global sourcing and procurement strategies.
Create and formally document a supplier risk register with the corresponding mitigation plan.
Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities
Knowledge and skills in negotiation practices, industrial product costing, total-cost-of-ownership calculations and industrial commercial terms negotiation.
Knowledge of mass production fabrication and assembly processes, ISO 9000/QS9000 certification requirements.
Knowledge and ability to develop suppliers and procure from them in a low volume and high mix environment (LVHM).
Logistics knowledge, import/export concepts and practices, warehousing, and transportation.
Basic knowledge of machining, casting, and forging processes.
Basic knowledge of the steel and metal alloys industrial supply base.
Knowledge of industrial electric motors and motor control elements and the respective supply bases.
Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing theory and practices. Ability to participate in kaizen events, Root-Cause-Counter-Measure (RCCM), and problem-solving 8D sessions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Supply Chain or equivalent experience and education.
- 7+ years of experience in procurement or strategic sourcing.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.
- High sense of urgency
