Information freshness for integrated communications and sensing in industrial IoT
What to expect:
Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) will constitute a pillar of upcoming 6G networks. Following this paradigm, radio signals or dedicated sensors can be used to detect and estimate characteristics of target objects in the environment. The integration of sensing into the communications network allows the network to act as a “radar” and to comprehend the physical world in which it operates, collecting data on the range, velocity, position, orientation, size, shape, image, materials of objects and devices. These possibilities pose in turn new challenges in defining how resources have to be shared between sensing and communications, in order to acquire and distribute information in the most efficient way for the goal at hand.
In this context, the thesis will focus on a use case of particular interest, considering industrial IoT settings where autonomous robots can move around a plant to carry out predefined tasks. To this aim, leveraging sensing capabilities can be key to properly coordinate movement and avoid collisions. The work will tackle the design and optimization of ICAS algorithms, allowing the candidate to explore a topic of high interest in the research community.
What we expect from you:
  • Study of Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering or Computer Science or similar
  • Knowledge of layer 2 protocols is a plus (medium access control)
  • Good analytical skills
  • Experience in MATLAB or Python programming
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
